Dear Colleagues, Students, and Alumni of our Faculty,
It is my privilege to introduce this 2025 edition of our faculty newsletter, which highlights the scholarly contributions of our community. We conclude the year with good spirit following the news that our emeritus professor, Prof. Dr. Ömer Gören, has been awarded The William H. Webb Medal 2025 by the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME). This honor acknowledges his exceptional career and lasting impact on naval architecture and ocean engineering education, highlighting our commitment to teaching excellence.
The research efforts detailed in the newsletter demonstrate our commitment to foundational and applied science. Current experimental work in the ITU Cavitation Tunnel (ITUKAT) investigates complex hydrodynamic phenomena, providing essential data for design optimization. Concurrently, advanced numerical studies address critical challenges in offshore engineering, contributing to the resilient design of marine renewable energy systems. Recently, our pioneering spirit was further demonstrated as our Marine Robotics Laboratory successfully conducted Turkey’s first-ever model-scale demonstration of a Dynamic Positioning System on ITU Lake, marking a significant national milestone in maritime control technology. Furthermore, our dedication to innovation is exemplified by the recent patent completion for a Telescopic Anti-Roll System Based on the Magnus Effect. This invention, developed within our faculty, represents a significant advancement in marine vessel stabilization technology.
Together, these accomplishments showcase the strength of our academic environment. They underscore our role in advancing knowledge and preparing future leaders in our field. I extend my sincere gratitude to all our faculty members, researchers, and students for their dedication. It is through their sustained effort that we maintain our position at the forefront of maritime science and engineering.
