Winner of NJORD Autonomous Ship Challenge 2023: ITU Autobee

ITU Autobee participated in the NJORD Autonomous Ship Challenge held in Trondheim, Norway in August 2023, as the only team from Türkiye. Following the requirements of the NJORD Autonomous Ship Competition held in Trondheim, Norway, Autobee Team, one of the teams of Istanbul Technical University Faculty of Naval Architecture and Ocean Sciences, designed and created an unmanned fully autonomous surface ship of L<2 m. The team has prepared a fully autonomous catamaran-type vessel with dimensions of 155x147x125 cm and a displacement of 32 kg.

Vesselbee 02 has been equipped with SICK LMS 151 Lidar with 42 m of range and RTK GPS with <5 cm accuracy. With these sensors, fully custom autonomous algorithms have made the vessel complete collision avoidance tasks with extreme precision. During the task, Otter (vessel expected to be avoided) from Maritime Robotics was sent into the route of Vesselbee 02, and Vesselbee 02 was required to detect and reroute accordingly without any warning or knowledge of the route of Otter.

At the end of the competition, the Autobee Team won First place by competing against MIT, NTNU, and many more prestigious universities worldwide.

These are the teams that participated:

  1. Arcturus (USA, MIT)
  2. Técnico Solar Boat (Portugal, Instituto Superior Técnico)
  3. Vortex (Norway, NTNU)
  4. Autobee (Turkey, Istanbul Technical University)
  5. StrathVoyager (Scotland, University of Strathclyde)
  6. Aritra (India, Indian Institute of Technology Madras)
  7. Navier (Norway, USN)

ITU Autobee is a student team supervised by Asst Prof Cihad Delen at ITU faculty of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. The ITU Autobee team, with the contribution of students from various disciplines under the leadership of Team Captain Fuat Peri, has won honors in National and International competitions.
