A new project led by Dr. Oktay Eren Türeyen and funded by Istanbul Technical University’s Scientific Research Projects (BAP) Coordination Unit will focus on determining the bioavailable fractions of priority organic pollutants in marine sediments using locally developed butyl rubber passive samplers.

This initiative aims to fill a critical gap in current environmental monitoring practices by offering an effective, cost-efficient, and scalable alternative to widely used imported passive sampling systems. The project’s domestic focus supports national capacity building and has the potential to reduce foreign dependency in coastal pollution surveillance programs.

The expected outcomes will contribute to environmental risk assessments and inform data-driven decision-making in marine ecosystem protection and coastal management policies. Furthermore, by advancing the use of passive samplers for bioavailability-focused assessments, the project could lead to more refined approaches in ecosystem health evaluations, with broader implications for public health and seafood safety.
